PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed. Most of the teeth Americans lose after the age of 30 are lost due to periodontal disease.

Warning Signs:
Periodontal disease is often silent. Symptoms may not appear, or may go unnoticed, until the disease is at an advanced stage. Signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Gums that pull away from the teeth
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pus between the gum and the tooth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • A change in the fit of partial dentures

What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who has been specially trained to treat gum disease, perform periodontal plastic surgery, and place dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and can help you keep your teeth for life!
