PERIODONTAL PLASTIC PROCEDURES

There are sophisticated procedures to enhance the appearance, color, contours, health, and comfort of the teeth and the supporting tissue surrounding them. This often involves changing the level of the gums to establish the correct amount of tooth exposure. The key objective is a natural cosmetic result with little or no visual evidence that a surgical procedure has been performed. Described below are some of the procedures that we provide in our offices.

Periodontal Disease Exams
Dr. Renegar, Dr. Osborne, or Dr. Curry will complete a thorough examination to diagnose gum disease, measure for bone loss, and look for other dental problems.  At your first appointment you will be asked to provide a complete medical history. Your history, plus our doctors' findings, will be used to create a personalized treatment plan. This plan will be thoroughly discussed with you and your general dentist before any treatment begins.

Functional Crown Lengthening
If a tooth is decayed, has fractured below the gum line, or does not have enough structure present to support a crown, we can increase the surface area to support a crown, therefore saving the tooth. This treatment involves recontouring the gum tissue, and in some cases, the underlying bone that surrounds one or more teeth.

Aesthetic Crown Lengthening
You may have asked your periodontist about procedures to improve a "gummy" smile because your teeth appear short. Your teeth may actually be the proper length, but are covered with too much gum tissue. To correct this, your periodontist performs aesthetic crown lengthening, which removes excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth.

Aesthetic Gingival Contouring
Sometimes, as the gums extend onto the front surface of the teeth, the natural balance between the length of the teeth and the height of the gums is lost. Healthy gums, tight against the necks of the teeth, are an important part of a beautiful smile. Our doctors can recontour your gingiva to provide a more ideal aesthetic presentation.

Dental Implants
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that the periodontist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth, bridge, or denture. Implants are made of titanium, using the same technology as in hip and knee replacements. After the implant is placed, we allow three months for the bone to attach to the titanium. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, injury, or an accident. Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost the tooth.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Exposed tooth roots are the result of gum recession. Your gums may have receded for a variety of reasons including aggressive tooth brushing or periodontal disease. You may not be in control of what caused the recession, but your periodontist can help you identify the factors contributing to the problem. Once these contributing factors are controlled, a soft tissue graft procedure will repair the defect and help to prevent additional recession and bone loss.

Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™
A common complaint of orthodontic patients is the length of treatment time. A new approach called Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™ (AOO) is now being implemented to cut treatment time in half. AOO™ is a surgical procedure which allows orthodontic movement at an accelerated rate. The AOO™ procedure is feasible for most patients, regardless of age, as long as their permanent teeth are present. AOO™ also allows the orthodontist to complete some tooth movements not otherwise possible.
