Watch the LANAP Laser Procedure

The Stages of LANAP

Traditional gum surgery typically requires cutting away healthy gum tissue and can result in gum recession. The LANAP® laser protocol is a minimally invasive procedure that can effectively save loose teeth that may otherwise need to be extracted. If you need gum surgery as part of your periodontal disease treatment plan, here is what you can expect from LANAP® laser treatment with Dr. Pierce Osborne, Dr. Michael Curry, and Dr. Wes Shelton:

  • Measurement of pocket depths
  • Passing laser over treatment area to kill bacteria
  • Removing calculus (tartar) from the root surfaces
  • Passing the laser a second time to create a clot
  • Compressing the gums against the tooth
  • Adjusting the bite

  1. Pocket depth measurement. This allows us to determine how much loss of attachment may have occurred between the teeth and gums.
  2. Bacteria removal. We will use a pulsed light laser on the treatment area to kill bacteria as part of your periodontal disease treatment. The laser keeps healthy tissue intact.
  3. Calculus removal. We will use small ultrasonic scalers to break down calculus deposits on the surfaces of the teeth for easy removal.
  4. Second laser pass. The laser is passed over the treatment area a second time to help form a clot. This creates the ideal healing environment to reduce the risk of infection.
  5. Tissue compression. The rest of the gum tissue is compressed against the surface of the tooth to promote healing. We do not need to use any stitches in this procedure.
  6. Bite adjustment. You may need to have your bite adjusted to reduce stress and pressure on certain teeth.
